Chilean Street Art news from our international correspondant

This just in from Dr. Rod Palmer in Chile: Graffiti Porteño 2010 is an event organized by the Chilean graffiti writers Inti, Hes and Saile, in Chile´s main port of Valparaíso. The idea of an activity in Valparaíso that would display the high standard of Chilean graffiti first arose in 2009: when Inti and Hes launched Graffiti Porteño – in the port of Bergen, Norway. Graffiti Porteño 2010 has been realized with the backing of Valparaíso´s local government, Montana Colors, Chile´s Consejo Nacional de la Cultura (National Council for Culture) and Balmaceda Arte Joven (Balmaceda Young Art). Graffiti Porteño 2010 features an exhibition in the Consejo de la Cultura HQ in Valparaíso. Here the four graffiti writers Inti, Hes, Saile and LRM (La Robot de Madera : The Wooden Robot) show their visions of porteño / Chilean / South American graffiti. This exhibition does not propose graffiti brought inside, but rather installations that play on the contrasts between work in the street and for the gallery :

Saile, instalation.

As part of the same event, graffiti workshops were organized at Balmaceda Arte Joven; these were led by Aner and Maher of southern Chile´s Alapinta Crew (see earlier blog). To mark the event, Saile, Hes and Inti created the highest graffiti ever painted in Chile, in the Barrio Puerto (Port neighbourhood).

Graffiti by Saile, Hes, Inti.

This lasting icon of the event, and spectacular embellishment to Valparaíso´s cityscape, is intended to form part of an itinerary of large scale graffiti in Valparaíso. For more information, see the official web page www.GraffitiValparaiso.com , which includes photographs of all aspects of Graffiti Porteño 2010, and news of future plans for the event.
